Scripture

Joy to the World

Joy to the World, the Lord has come!

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Verse 2

Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!

Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

Verse 3

No more let sins and sorrows grow,

Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make His blessings flow

Far as the curse is found,

Far as the curse is found,

Far as, far as, the curse is found.

Verse 4

He rules the world with truth and grace,

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Reflection

What makes Christianity unique is the character of its ruler. God, though one who has all power, does not seek to use that power in ruling the earth. Our ruler does not hoard, cheat, spin the truth or conquer. God rules the world with truth and grace. Our ruler came to earth in the form of a helpless infant instead of a dominating conquerer. It is a paradoxical image to sing the “Savior reigns” at Christmas time as we imagine the baby in a manger.

We don’t expect rulers to save, or saviors to rule. But with the birth of Jesus Christ, the world was turned upside down. The Savior rules because truth and grace will win the day in the end. God’s blessings flow and the wonders of God’s love will never cease to reach the smallest corners of creation. Because God is the act of pure love, God can save and rule. We are saved by love, and so are those around us. The question is - How do we share that love with others? In a world where authority and power are sought by most, how do we live by humility and grace? I think this is worth considering at Christmas time and every time thereafter.
