76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin. He came before Jesus to prepare the world for the Messiah. In these verses, Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, sings of his son’s destiny. Read v.78-99 slowly and imagine the sun rising slowly over a dark valley. Imagine sitting in darkness and having the rising sun slowly warm your face. In the presence of Jesus, there is light, there is peace. Even in dark times or difficult circumstances we can find the light of Jesus. Often we just need to look for it.
Today, ask God to show you the light and the path to peace. Sit for a moment, amidst the Christmas flurry of activity and let the light shine on your face. Feel the presence of Jesus with you and know that whenever you find yourself in a dark place, you always have the light of Jesus to help you find your way home.
Dear God, in this Advent/Christmas season, I thank you for the gift of Jesus. I will never understand this great love you have for me, but today, I will try to honor the gift. Guide me as I seek to be a gift to others. Show me where there is need and guide me to bless others as you have blessed me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
