Genesis 1:27

So God created mankind in his own image,

    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

I was created in the image of God. So were you. So was every human being on earth. This is so important to understand, not just for our personal lives, but for our work and purpose in the world.

Personally, if we are to become our true selves, we have to begin by recognizing God within us. We have been created with a divine truth, a piece of ourselves that continues to call us toward God and toward our truest self. This imago Dei (image of God) is begging to be known by you and shown to others every moment of every day. And when we recognize our own imago Dei, we are able to accept grace for ourselves and live into this truth of who God created us to be. It calls us to fall more in love with our Creator, and grow in our love of ourselves and others.

Once we begin to accept and grow into our imago Dei, we can begin to see the same image of God in others. This is the basis for love, grace, mercy, compassion, generosity, and justice. When we see others as created in the image of God, we only want what’s best for them. We yearn to see them flourishing and living into the truth of their being as well.

Collectively, as we accept ourselves and others as created in the image of God, we grow in our gratitude and love for God. We develop humility, knowing that this is both a divine gift and a high calling. We recognize that on our own, we are really capable of so little. We need the God “puzzle piece” in each of us to make us whole, to become our truest selves. And we begin to recognize the imago Dei in every face we encounter. We innately understand that you, just like me, were created by God, in God, for God.

I encourage you to spend some time thinking about the image of God in you. When do you see it? How do you experience it? What does it look like for you to live as your truest self in and through the imago Dei?

God of all Creation, thank you for creating me in your image. Help me grow into that image and become the truest version of myself. Show me the image of God in every face I encounter. Help me grow in my love for you and others. Give me humility, grace, and compassion. Let me lead others to recognize your image in them as well. I love you, Lord. Amen.
