1 John 4:16-18

16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

One of the most iconic and odd American millionaires was Howard Hughes.  He built great wealth and a unique reputation.  As one of the wealthiest of his day he was asked in an interview, “How much is enough?” With a smile, he replied, “Just a little bit more.”

Sometimes we think if I just had a little bit more I would be secure.  Here Howard Hughes is an example.  He died a recluse, terrified of dying, of germs, and contact with people.  For all his wealth, he died in fear.  There is simply not enough of anything but God’s love that casts out fear.

As Liz and I approached retirement, we met with our financial advisor.  I was very afraid that we didn’t have enough. Truth is we didn’t and don’t if I need enough to cover all the frightful things that might happen, such as financial collapse, extended illnesses, tax increases, economic depressions, etc. As well as we planned, Liz and I came into retirement not trusting in our IRA, bank account, long term care insurance, pension or Social Security.  Only perfect love casts out fear!  God is that perfect love and is ENOUGH.  There is no greater love to cast out all our fears.

My trust, my security isn’t in having enough, Lord.  My security is in hour love, grace and mercy.  It is in your promise.  Amen.
