14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
As a staff, we met to pray for every young man and woman going through confirmation by name at the start of their journey. Then, we all picked names at random whom we each individually prayed for throughout their 10-week discipleship experience. Our prayer for the confirmands was a modified version of this prayer that Paul prays for the church in Ephesus. It’s such a powerful and beautiful prayer for us too. Whether you’ve been a believer most of your life or you’re new to the faith or you’re agnostic about spiritual things, remember this prayer. It’s worth coming back to over and over again and incorporating into your own prayer life. Read this again and read it like Paul is praying for you. Now, pray this prayer for the first person that comes to your mind and anyone God puts on your heart to pray for.
Holy God, every family derives its name from you because you were the Word in the beginning. From you, all life came and without you, there would be nothing. Out of your glory, strengthen us with your power so that Christ will live in our hearts through faith. Help us remain rooted and established in love together with your church that we may grasp the vast expanse and dimension of your love for us. Increase within us the capacity to love you more and may that transform all of our relationships for your glory. Lord, you are able to do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine by your power that is at work within us. Make us brave to use your power to love and heal and pray and serve and not lose faith. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
